Running this map
Put anything with a ranged attack on the clifftops and the party has to choose between crossing the bridge under fire or finding a way up. The boulders are the only cover on the canyon floor. Cutting the bridge is the kind of decision players remember, so it is worth knowing in advance what is on the far side.
